COVE FIGHTING FIT AS TRAINING RESUMES IN COUNTDOWN TO NEW CAMPAIGN
OFF AND RUNNING: The Cove Rangers players sweating it out in preseason training at Balmoral Stadium.
IN CHARGE: Co-manager Graeme Mathieson looks on as Cove defender Darryn Kelly gets to work.
WELCOME ABOARD: New signing Jamie Redman takes part in his first training session since joining Cove Rangers from Montrose.
COVE Rangers co-manager Graeme Mathieson has praised his players for returning to pre-season training in peak condition.
The squad were put through their paces in an intense three hour session at Balmoral Stadium as the build up to the club’s first season playing in League Two began in earnest.
Graeme said: “I have to applaud the players for the way they looked after themselves during the close season.
“They were given a programme to follow, which included a week of just total rest.
“It’s to their credit that they have done what was asked and come back in really good shape.
“It’s no surprise because they are a pretty dedicated bunch who take pride in their fitness.
“The first session is always tough but they came through it no problem, it was a good morning’s work.”
Graeme admitted the extra effort from the players should ensure they are up to speed in time for the League opener, against Edinburgh City on August 3rd, and the programme of Betfred League Cup ties, which kicks off with a visit to Peterhead on July 13th.
“Let’s not forget they are part-time players,” he said.
“We only work with them for about three hours a week once the season gets underway so it’s important they take responsibility for their fitness, which they do.
“They are all at the gym five out of seven days and they work hard when they are with us too.
“They also take care with their diet, we are very fortunate to have a squad who are willing to do whatever they need to ensure they are capable of competing at the highest level possible.”
Recent signing Jamie Redman, who joined Cove from Montrose last week, was among those who sweated it out in a series of stamina runs and circuits during the session.
Graeme confirmed they are also working on making at least two more signings ahead of the trip to the Blue Toon.
“The important thing is to ensure anyone we bring in, like Jamie, is going to improve what we already have,” said Graeme.
“Talks with our other targets are at an advanced stage and we hope they will be concluded successfully in the coming week.”
