COVE MIDFIELD ACE SAM DELIGHTED TO BE BACK AND KEEN TO MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME
BACK IN THE GROOVE: Cove Rangers midfielder Sam Burnett has returned to action after almost a year out because of a knee injury.
COVE Rangers midfielder Sam Burnett says it was great to finally return to first team action in the midweek 6-2 victory over Rothes at Balmoral Stadium in the Breedon Highland League.
The former Arbroath player came on as a half-time substitute for Blair Yule to make his first appearance since suffering a serious knee injury in March of last year.
"It's hard to describe just how happy I was to get on in the game," said Sam, who recently signed a new two year extension to his current contract with Cove Rangers.
"I'm happy to admit there were times when I wondered if that day would ever come, it's only natural to think like that when you are out long term with an injury.
"But things have been going very well for me since the turn of the year.
"I've been working really hard in training and got runs in a few Under-20 and bounce games in the hope of showing I was ready to make my return at first team level.
"Now that I've done that the next step is to push my way back into the team on a regular basis, which I accept won't be easy because they had managed pretty well without me so far this season.
"But the injury meant I missed out on the exciting part of the campaign last time around.
"That's made me even more eager to be at the heart of things as we move towards the end of this campaign."
The victory over Rothes sent Cove leapfrogging over Brora Rangers and back to the top of the Highland League and they travel to Banff tomorrow to face Deveronvale looking for another three points to make sure they stay there.
Sam said: "We know that's something we are going to have to earn, we never get it easy up at Banff."
Midfielders Yule and Jamie Masson are major doubts because of knocks and full-back Harry Milne is definitely out because of a hamstring injury.
But Cove are hopeful that defender Darryn Kelly, who has been having treatment to a knee injury, will be fit enough to return to the squad for the clash with Vale.
