REDS LEGEND JOHN CONVINCED COVE RANGERS WOULD FLOURISH IF THEY SUCCEED IN BID TO STEP UP TO SPFL
WELL DONE: John Hewitt presents Cove Rangers striker Mitch Megginson with his man of the match award, on behalf of sponsors ACE, during a recent visit to Balmoral Stadium.
DONS Gothenburg Great John Hewitt reckons Cove Rangers would do more than hold their own if they gained promotion up into the SPFL.
Cove are due to face Berwick Rangers in the SPFL Pyramid Play-off, with the first leg at Balmoral Stadium on Saturday.
John, who scored Aberdeen’s winner when they beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the 1983 European Cup Winners Cup final, would love to see Cove, whom he also played for at the end of his illustrious career, winning to go up into League Two from the start of next season.
"I genuinely hope they get there because it would be brilliant for Cove and for the whole of the north-east,” said John, who was the player/assistant manager to fellow Dons legend Doug Rougvie at Cove in 1997.
"The city could do with a second club playing at the highest levels.
“Cove get good support already, but I reckon they would see a big rise in attendances because it would be something totally new for football fans in this area.
"And, from speaking to some of the people at Cove, it's clear they won't just be content with just making up the numbers, like a lot of other clubs, if they ever do get up there.
"They might have to find their feet a wee bit while adjusting to the challenge of playing at new level, but I'm sure Cove would be looking to eventually get up out of the bottom division, they would be eager to make their mark."
