JAMIE Masson brought his goal tally for the season to an impressive 10 with a dandy double as we overcame battling Brechin City at Glebe Park to start the new year in winning style.
Cove skipper Mitch Megginson also scored twice, with Fraser Fyvie netting the fifth with a well struck long distance shot, in a game that was actually close fought for the first hour or so.
But Cove were always the superior of the two sides and their fitness told, with four of our goals coming inside the last 25 minutes.
With Declan Glass now back with parent club Dundee United there was a start for striker John Robertson, who played a key part in the first half opener.
Latest loan signing Josh Mulligan began the afternoon on the bench but impressed when he came on late in the game.
Jimmy Scott had the first effort on target, when his second minute shot was held by Brechin keeper Lewis McMinn.
The home side responded with Olly Hamilton latching on to a pass from Dougie Hill to fire a low shot across the face of the Cove goal and wide.
Paul Allan then floated free kick into the Cove area to Hill and his header was held by Stuart McKenzie.
Cove took control after that, with Megginson testing McMinn again in the 20th minute with a low shot after he had collected a pass from Blair Yule.
That was followed by Harry Milne feeding the ball to Megginson and McMinn did well to block his low drive from 16 yards.
Robertson looked to be tripped as he raced to get on to the rebound but referee David Dickinson waved away Cove appeals for a penalty.
Cove threatened again on the half-hour when Robertson passed to Yule and his shot was blocked behind for a corner by Hill.
Robertson’s cross from the first corner was blocked for another - but Cove took the lead from the second.
Yule made a clever run to create space for MASSON to latch on to Robertson’s well placed low pass to the edge of the area and the Cove midfielder claimed his ninth goal of the campaign will a powerful drive through a ruck of players into the net.
Connor Scully almost made it 2-0 in the 38th minute with a low shot that McMinn managed to push wide of his right post.
Brechin almost equalised in the 40th minute, when Paul McManus cut in from the left to hit a shot that McKenzie pushed wide of the front post.
Cove ended the half strongly, with Milne and Megginson both seeing shots saved by the busy McMinn.
Brechin were very determined though and equalised in the 53rd minute when McManus crossed from the right and Ryan McCORD netted with a perfectly placed first time shot from just inside the Cove area.
Cove were unlucky not to go back in front four minutes later when Robertson’s 10 yard shot was cleared off the Brechin goal line by Hill.
Cove deservedly regained the lead in the 65th minute, after skipper Megginson had blocked a clearance in side the Brechin area.
The ball fell to that man MASSON and he shuffled about to create space for himself then lashed an unstoppable 18 yard shot past the diving McMinn.
Mulligan made his debut when he came on for Robertson in the 68th minute and his first involvement was a pass for Yule, who sent in a cross to Fyvie, but his header was held by McMinn.
Cove made it 3-1 in the 74th minute with a real cracker of a strike from skipper MEGGINSON.
Fyvie flicked the ball through to him and the striker gave McMinn no chance with a perfectly hit first time volley from the just inside the Brechin area.
McMinn then saved from Mulligan as Cove went in search of more.
We claimed our fourth in the 82nd minute thanks to a powerful 30 yard forward back by Scully.
He then cleverly fed the ball to MEGGINSON, who sent a low shot into the net from the edge of the Brechin area.
FYVIE claimed Cove’s fifth, in the 85th minute, with a powerful 35-yard shot that McMinn could only help into the net to keep us ahead of Edinburgh City at the top of the table.
