UNBEATEN RUN ENDS AT OCHILVIEW PARK AFTER ACTION PACKED FIRST HALF
Stenhousemuir 3 Cove Rangers 1
Ladbrokes League Two
Saturday October 5, 2019
At Ochilview Park
We arrived at Ochilview unbeaten in the league and on the back of six straight wins. The manager named the same side that had beaten Annan Athletic the previous week at Balmoral Stadium.
We got off to the perfect start just two minutes into the match. In a sublime piece of free flowing football, Masson started the move by cutting in from the left before finding Chris Antonaizzi on the right wing; he showed some great footwork before his cross into the back post was put on a plate for Masson, who tapped in the opener from close range.
However, Stenny were quick to respond, with Marsh equalising just six minutes later. Mark McGuigan attacked the right channel, before his looping cross met his strike partner Hopkirk at the far post, who squared it for the oncoming Marsh who had the easy task of finishing from a yard out.
It was end to end stuff from here, but neither team could find the killer pass, until Stenny skipper Munro found an opening for Hopkirk to nip between two defenders before slotting the ball under McKenzie.
On the stroke of half time, Stenny established a two goal cushion from the penalty spot. The referee adjudged Scott Ross had pulled down McGuigan in the box, and McGuigan cooly dispatched before the referee blew to end an action packed first half.
It was to be a match of two halves with the second half much less eventful, we had all of the possession, but could not find the finish required to bring us back into the match.
With ten minutes to go, substitute Jimmy Scott latched onto an excellent ball from Fyvie, but his shot from 10 yards was stopped by the on-rushing Graeme Smith when it looked like the former Stenny man would reduce the deficit and set up a nervy final10 minutes for the home crowd.
We did pull one back with two minutes left on the clock, with the ball being worked wide to substitute, Fraser Aird, whose superb cross met the head of Scott, who finished on this occasion, with a great header which nestled in the far corner.
No further chances would come in the final few minutes, as Stenny took all three points and would result in our first league defeat of the season.
