GOAL HERO SAM HAPPY TO PLAY HUGE PART IN COVE HIGHLAND CUP VICTORY OVER FORMARTINE UNITED
STRIKE ONE: Cove Rangers midfielder Sam Burnett flips the ball beyond Formartine United keeper Kevin Main for the opening goal in the Highland League Cup Final.
SAM Burnett says he was shocked to have been given the chance play a starring role in their Highland League Cup final triumph over Formartine United.
Midfielder Sam scored the first goal and helped set up the second as Cove ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at Harlaw Park, Inverurie.
It was only his second start since returning from an 11 month spell on the sidelines recovering from a serious knee injury.
“I could hardly believe it when the manager told me I was playing,” said Sam.
“Because I had been out for so long I had honestly been hoping to maybe feature off the bench between now and the end of the season.
“It was a huge boost to be told I was in from the start in such a big game.”
Sam repaid Cove boss John Sheran’s faith by scoring the vital first goal in what had been up to that point a tense and closely contested final.
He collected a chipped pass forward from Connor Scully, on his chest when his back was still to goal, then hooked the ball past advancing Formartine keeper Kevin Main, despite protests from the opposing camp that Sam had strayed offside
“It was the ideal time to get my first goal of the season,” said Sam.
“I definitely wasn’t offside, I knew I had timed my run right to be there for what was a perfect dink over by Connor.
“It was then just a case of staying calm. I could feel the keeper getting closer behind me so decided lifting the ball over him was the best thing to do.
“It was a great feeling seeing the ball going in.
“I’ve not scored many goals for Cove so that one is right up there as the best of them because it was so important.
“We pretty much controlled the game from then on.”
Cove made it 2-0 seconds before the break, after Main failed to hold a shot from Sam and Mitch Megginson slotted home the rebound to claim his 45th goal of the season.
Sam said: “Mitch is always sniffing about like that so you know there is always a chance if you can get shots on target.
“The two goal cushion gave us a lot of confidence and I feel we were worthy winners in the end.”
HEROIC HUG: Sam Burnett is swamped by delighted Cove team mates after scoring in the Highland League Cup Final.
